The Harambee Stars’ remarkable run in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) ended in heartbreak on Friday, August 22, 2025, as they fell 4-3 in a penalty shootout to Madagascar at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Despite the loss, national leaders, including Kapseret Member of Parliament (MP) Oscar Sudi, have lauded the team’s resilience and fighting spirit, which has reignited pride across the country.

Sudi commends team spirit

In a post on X on August 23, 2025, Sudi praised the players for their effort and dedication.

“Tough break against Madagascar, losing on penalties, but HUGE respect to the Harambee Stars for giving it your all! Your passion, heart, and dedication inspire a nation,” he wrote.

Acknowledging the narrow margins that decided the match, he added, “Those penalties were razor-thin margins, but we know your spirit remains unbroken.”

The match itself ended in a 1-1 draw in regulation time, with Kenya pushing Madagascar to extra time before penalties determined the outcome. Stars had previously topped their group undefeated, a rare achievement for Kenyan football on the continental stage, generating nationwide excitement and hope.

He noted that losing in the “lottery of penalties is no dishonour; to push the contest to such a finish is itself a badge of greatness.”

Ruto extended congratulations to Madagascar and encouraged Kenyans to continue supporting the Pamoja CHAN tournament, highlighting the importance of learning from the campaign in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

FKF celebrates team effort

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed, accompanied by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Sports CS Salim Mvurya, visited the team in the dressing room after the match. “Together in victory, together in defeat… We are proud of how far they’ve come and the unity they’ve inspired across the country. This journey is a foundation for what lies ahead,” Mohammed said.

He praised the fans’ unwavering support and the government’s backing, adding, “Though the journey ends here, reaching the CHAN 2024 quarterfinals has shown what we can achieve when we believe and work together.”
