Starehe MP Amos Mwago has blamed traffic disruptions along Thika Road for Harambee Stars’ elimination from the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

In a statement posted on his X account on August 22, 2025, Mwago criticised the decision to block a major highway hours ahead of the match against Madagascar, saying it caused unnecessary delays and confusion.

“The problem started here. Blocking the major highway for a match that starts at 5 pm was unnecessary,” Mwago wrote.

He went on to add, “This is where the mess began, and then another one followed later.”

Kenya’s elimination

Mwago’s remarks came after Harambee Stars were knocked out of the tournament in the quarter-finals at the Moi Sports Centre, Kasarani.

The national team lost 4-3 on penalties to Madagascar after a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time.

Making their debut in the competition, Harambee Stars had taken the lead early in the second half through Alphonce Omija’s header.

However, a potential second goal by striker Ryan Ogam was disallowed for a foul in the buildup.

Madagascar equalised in the 68th minute after Fenohasina Razafimanana converted a penalty, forcing extra time and eventually penalties, where the island nation prevailed.

Support and criticism

Mwago’s sentiments contrast with those of other leaders who praised Harambee Stars for their spirited performance despite the loss.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, in a statement posted on his X account on August 22, 2025, lauded the team’s display, describing it as one of the best in recent years.

“Well done #HarambeeStars. You played some of the best football we have seen in recent times from the national team,” he wrote.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also expressed pride in the team’s resilience, urging Kenyans to continue supporting the players as they look ahead to future tournaments.

“You fought with spirit and determination to elevate Kenya’s football to new heights, pushing through to the CHAN quarter-finals. Your resilience and passion inspire us all. Keep shining and making us proud!” Gachagua stated.
