Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has hailed Harambee Stars for what he described as some of the finest football the national team has displayed in recent years.

In a statement posted on his X account on August 22, 2025, Sifuna praised the team’s performance despite their loss to Madagascar in their CHAN quarterfinal clash, noting that Kenyans remained proud of their efforts.

“Well done #HarambeeStars. You played some of the best football we have seen in recent times from the national team,” he wrote.

Lauding the team’s dedication, Sifuna expressed his commitment to continue supporting the national squad.

Nyinyi bado ni wetu, and we are proud of you,” he added.

Kenya’s elimination

Sifuna’s remarks come in the wake of Kenya’s elimination from the 2024 African Nations Championship.

The team’s campaign ended suddenly at the Moi Sports Centre in Kasarani on August 22, 2025, when they lost 4-3 on penalties to Madagascar in the quarter-finals.

Making their debut in the tournament, Harambee Stars initially seemed poised for a historic semi-final berth after Alphonce Omija’s powerful header gave them the lead shortly after the break.

However, moments later, a goal by striker Ryan Ogam was disallowed for a foul during the buildup.

Madagascar equalised in the 68th minute with a penalty converted by Fenohasina Razafimanana after a foul in the box, sending the match into extra time.

With neither side able to score during extra time, the game was decided by penalties, where Madagascar held their nerve to win 4-3.

Support from leaders

Following Harambee Stars’ elimination, various leaders took to social media to express solidarity with the team.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, in a statement posted on his X account on the same day, expressed pride in the national team’s performance and encouraged them to focus on future competitions.

“Exceptional play by HarambeeStars with a master class performance. We are proud of you, you gave it all for the love of Kenya,” Cherargei stated.

The Senator emphasised that despite the tournament exit, the team had exceeded expectations and elevated Kenya’s football profile internationally.

“You have outperformed yourselves, you have put Kenya on the world map of Football,” he added.
